The first quarter of 2008 has been very prosperous for us at AMP, and we have a lot to celebrate.

I am overjoyed to announce the return of Peuo Tuy & Rachel Kara Peréz to AMP. Additionally, I would like to announce the arrival of two new AMP artists. The first is Howard Seraph Smith, who is joining AMP as both an author and as our staff editor and performance coach. Howard was a member of the Buffalo national slam team for two consecutive years, and earned the title of 2006 Grand Slam Champion. Our second addition is longtime AMP collaborator, Blackout Arts Collective member, and jane-of-all trades, Ella Turenne. Ella arrives with vast experience on and off stage. She is a poet/actress/dancer/script

writer/director/film producer/graphic artist/somethingelseimsureiforgot. I would also like to congratulate Ernest Estime on making the Suffolk Community College slam team, which placed 5th overall in the College National Poetry Slam. On May 2, One Mic: A Lyrics on Lockdown Anthology, 2004-2008 (guest edited by our very own Ella Turenne), will be released to an audience at The New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study. One Mic is the product of a program called Lyrics on Lockdown, which was created in 2001 by Blackout Arts Collective, and which has evolved to a campaign that bridges the chasm between three universities (NYU, Columbia, and the New School) and Rikers Island Academy. As many of you know, my relationship with Blackout, and particularly LOL, shaped my direction as an artist, and ultimately, as a publisher. In 2003, Ella & I co-edited I Got Something to Say!, the very first Lyrics on Lockdown chapbook anthology. That was my first book design project, and as most of you know, I have come a long way since then. If you are available, please join us on Friday, May 2nd, from 6:30 -- 9:30pm at the Gallatin Theater. Performers will include Ella, Crystal Clarity (who hooked us up with an AMAZING cover design) myself, and Aliyah Ansari (whose poetry is featured in the anthology)! There will be an outing of epic proportions afterwards. Jorge was the finalist in the Platinum Comic Challenge, which is essentially the American Idol of comic books. Gunplay is set in the antebellum west, and its protagonist is a Buffalo Soldier who lives with a terrible curse: he must kill one person every day, or suffer excruciating and dreadful consequences. This book has national distribution, and is being published by Platinum Studios. I joined Jorge at the NY Comic Convention last week at Jacob Javits, followed by brief afterparty shenanigans and networking at Negril Village. You can order your copy of Gunplay at gunplaythecomic.com. Please support this amazing story, and my work. I would venture to say that the piece I wrote is one of my best, and set the tone for my writing for the remainder of the year. =)

I promise the next update will not be so lengthy, and that I've had an active role in producing the last two showcases, which were highly successful. Aliyah & Ernest have been heavily promoting each show through performances and word of mouth. More information on the next Blackout show will be posted soon, as will a few heavily anticipated updates, including one on the official release of my book, Prolific. As some of you know, I released a limited edition last summer, which had a successful short run.

Be on the lookout for the Art or Die anthology co-published by AMP & Blackout Press, as well as an untitled projects from Aliyah and Ernest.

We're everywhere, and we're quickly growing.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Hip-Hop Odyssey Awards at B.B. I was accompanied by fellow Blackout members, the lovely ladies of SistaPac Productions, and my long time friend and fellow performer, SoSoon. We sat at three long tables just above the VIP section (and in true VIP fashion we cut the line going into the venue to get our prime seating), and directly behind the booth where DJ Kool Herc (for those of you who don't know, he is the man who is credited as being THE pioneer of hip-hop) was seated along with his sister. The program was put together by volunteers from the Hip-Hop Association (H2A), led by Blackout co-founder and H2A Founder & Board Chairman, The Honorable George rithm Martinez.

The show was hosted by Paul Mooney, Ed Lover, & La Bruja.
