One Mic: A Lyrics on Lockdown Anthology; 2004-2008
Lyrics on Lockdown (LOL), a national movement launched by the Blackout Arts Collective in 2001, is a course taught by Ella Turenne in the Community Learning Initiative at Gallatin. Through hands-on collaboration with the Blackout Arts Collective and Riker's Island Academy, students have been creating artistic and dialogical spaces for critically thinking about the crisis of incarceration in this country. Thanks to a grant from NYU's Office of Community Service, LOL is able to publish the first anthology of art and poetry from LOL courses at Gallatin, the New School and Columbia.
This book is a collaboration between Blackout Arts Collective, Riker's Island Academy, The Community Learning Initiative at NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study, The Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University, and Eugene Lang College of The New School University for Liberal Arts.
One Mic features contributions from AMP Artists Ella Turenne and Aliyah Ansari, and a foreward by Blackout Arts Collective members Maytha Alhassen and Bryonn Bain.
